How We Work

About Louisville DSA

The Democratic Socialists of America is the largest socialist organization in the United States. We believe that working people should run both the economy and civil society, and we show our commitment to this principle by being an organization of, by, and for the working class.
As a member-driven and member-funded organization, the Louisville chapter of Democratic Socialists of America (LDSA) relies on our members’ commitment and consistent work.
You can join us! Being a member gives you full LDSA voting rights and access to our member communications tools. We encourage everyone to sign up for Monthly Membership Movement Builder dues (set to the amount you select) or Monthly Solidarity income-based dues (based off of on?a percent of your income) to fund our operations alongside donations. Visit the Democratic Socialists of America website to become a member, or follow us on social media and subscribe to our mailing list to learn more about how we work. Questions? Our Process

Mobilizing Members

The assembled LDSA membership is our ultimate decision-making body. The local convention and general meetings are the center for LDSA democratic deliberation and decisions, so member participation is crucial.

General Meetings

At bi-monthly general meetings, LDSA members gather to debate and vote on resolutions. General meetings also feature reports from committees, campaigns, and other regional organizations. General meetings are open to the public, but only members may vote.

Committee Meetings

Committee meetings are where much of our ongoing work is coordinated. All LDSA members are encouraged to join a committee. Our committees work to promote strategies and advance working-class-centered politics.

Local Annual Convention

Each summer, LDSA holds a local convention to elect chapter leadership, receive reports from committees, and select achievable priorities for the year. The convention is our highest legislative body, and only members may attend.

Other Events

Our members and supporters regularly convene for campaign meetings and related events, social gatherings, activism opportunities, and educational discussions. Watch our calendar to see when you can connect with us.

Chapter Leadership and Structure

All of our committee leadership positions and priority campaigns are democratically elected each year. LDSA’s committees coordinate and conduct the ongoing work that serves the chapter and supports our priority campaigns. The Steering Committee serves as our highest leadership body, deciding matters requiring immediate action, implementing strategy and membership decisions, and coordinating with coalition partners.

Standing Committees

Each standing-committee chair schedules and runs regular committee meetings, coordinates related projects and events, and organizes committee member volunteers. Between general meetings, LDSA members connect during standing committee and priority- campaign meetings and stay in touch through a messaging platform, regular emails, and our weekly newsletter, The Bulletin.
